Hillsborough Barracks
A rare example of a C19th walled barracks from the days when Brittannia ruled the waves and large areas of the world were coloured red in school atlases.
Scene of several violent deaths and supposedly haunted it’s a forgotten part of Sheffield and British military history. The gravestones incorporated in its walls were rescued on Ron’s suggestion and provide a glimpse into the grim world of Victorian Sheffield. The barracks was where Leutenant George Lambert, VC, of the 84th Foot, Sheffield’s real life Richard Sharpe, dropped dead on the parade ground and was interred in the nearby eerie Wardsend Cemetery where he lies still.
